Summary:
So you wanna know what Vocaloid is? Alright, then. Vocaloid is a singing-synthesis software. That's right, it's not an anime!
Those anime-styled characters that you see are just representations of the Vocaloid program.
There are many voices that can be used with the Vocaloid program, and each of these voices are referred to as Vocaloids themselves. Depending on the voice, a Vocaloid may be able to sing in English, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, and soon, maybe even French. However, the Vocaloid software is not limited to its intended language; a user can attempt to have a Vocaloid sing in a different language if they wanted to. The Vocaloid software has been updated a few times; the latest Vocaloid software is Vocaloid3.
I personally think that the software is popular because it gives the chance for otherwise ordinary people to create any type of song they like. There is already an existing audience for them to appeal to, and the virtual singer is not affected by matters such as success or scandals. The singer is whatever the user wants them to be and the possibilities are just endless. It's that infinite creativity what I find most appealing about Vocaloid.
Vocaloid YouTube Playlist (this section in construction)
In this section, I will choose a song that I think best demonstrates a Vocaloid voicebank. This section is ordered from the earliest Vocaloids to the most recently released Vocaloids, so you may or may not find the early Vocaloids lacking in quality.
The videos in these playlists are influenced by my own personal opinion (So I apologize if it turns out that our tastes are different). Also, video selections may change as time passes.

*Note: The "P"s on the end of an artist name are honorifics, similar to the western "Mr." and "Ms.". The "P"s refer to "Producer". In the Overseas Vocaloid Community, giving yourself a "P" is usually considered rude and it is looked down upon. On the flip side, however, it is often prevalent in the Japanese Community. (Personally, I think you should do whatever you want. In the end, though, it's the fans that decide whether or not to refer to you by your -P name.)
*Note: For future references, you will often see videos include PV in their title. PV stands for "Promotional Video"; it is the Japanese equivalent of MV (Music Video).
*Note: VocaDB is a database that meticulously organizes Vocaloid/UTAU/Voice-Synth albums and songs. It's a very valuable tool for finding information and sources about any song or album you're looking for.
